Edward Mercier was born on June 28, 1821, in Saint Ann, Montmorency, Canada. At the age of twenty-six he entered the religious life at the Montreal Novitiate in 1847. There he received the robe and the religious name of Brother Ezekiel. He taught in schools in Canada and New York. In 1861 he was assigned to St. Mary's School in Galveston, Texas, where after three years, he died of the yellow fever at age forty-three, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for seventeen years.
