Francis Straub was born on September 21, 1849, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Peter Joseph and Catherine Helmstetter Straub. He sought admission to the Brothers' Novitiate in New York at Second Street on August 14, 1863, where he received the robe and the religious name of Brother Eulian. Two years later in August of 1865 he arrived in St. Louis from Rochester, New York, and for two years he taught at St. Vincent's. He went to Detroit and then returned to New York. He died at Clason Point at age thirty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for twenty years.
