Hugh Brady was born in Buttlersbridge, Ireland, on January 1, 1840. His family emigrated to the United States and at age twenty-four he sought admission to the Brothers' Novitiate in New York City at Second Street in February of 1864. He received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Elixus. That year he was first assigned as an aid at La Salle School in New York but later that year, 1865, he was assigned in Chicago where he remained until he was assigned in 1868 to St. Joseph's in Baltimore, Maryland. He returned to New York as inspector of schools in 1870 and served as Sub-Director at 2nd Street, New York, in 1875. He was assigned to Utica as Director in 1876 and again to 2nd Street in 1879, in Yonkers as Director in 1881, in New York at St. Therese as Director in 1882, in Westchester in 1886 and in Chicopee in 1888. He returned to Chicago in 1889 and was named Director of Feehanville in 1890. Brother Elixus was assigned in St. Joseph, Missouri, at CBC in 1901 and at CBC in St. Louis in 1902. He was named Sub-Director of Novices in Glencoe in 1903 and taught the same year at St. Bridget's in St. Louis. He returned to De La Salle in Chicago 1903 to assist in the school office. He retired to the Community of Ancients in 1910 at Glencoe where he died at age eighty, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-six years.
