Born on June 29, 1844, in Anag, Wexford, Ireland, Thomas Bryne was the son of James and Alice Kehoe Bryne. He emigrated to the United States where, at age twenty-nine, he entered the Novitiate at Carondelet, Missouri, on October 29, 1873. There he received the habit and the religious name of Brother Diogenius John. He was assigned to teach at Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1874. Here, as well as in Chicago, Illinois; St. Paul, Minnesota; and New Orleans, Louisiana, he taught elementary and commercial classes. He spent the last ten years of his life at Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he was Sub-Director. He died after an operation which failed to alleviate an ailment. He was sixty-six years old at the time of his death and he had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for thirty-seven years.
