Brother Besas
Bernard Howe was born in Tipperary, Ireland, on January 1, 1814. He emigrated to the United States and at age thirty-three, in 1847, he sought admission to the Novitiate at Montreal, Canada. There he received the habit of the Brother and the religious name of Brother Besas. His teaching assignments took him to Ellicott City and Baltimore in Maryland. In 1864 he was assigned as Sub-Director at St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans. There he contracted the yellow fever and died at age fifty-three, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for twenty years.
