Br. Benedict of Mary
Philip McGuire was born the son of James and Elizabeth Brady McGuire on September 8, 1845, in Franklin, New York. At age fourteen he sought admission to religious life and entered the Novitiate at Montreal where he received the habit and religious name of Brother Benedict of Mary on December 25, 1859. He was assigned to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis in September of 1862 but was transferred to Ellicott Mills in 1866. He was Director of St. Joseph School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1870-1871 and was the founding Director of St. John's College in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He returned to CBC St. Louis in 1887 where he served as a prefect and was assigned to De La Salle High School in Kansas City, in 1889. After the turn of the century he retired to Pocantico Hills, New York, where he died at age seventy-five, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty-one years.
