Joseph Petit was born in 1829 at Saint Anne de La Pocatiere, Canada. He sought admission to religious life at the Brothers' Novitiate at Montreal, where he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Baldrede. He was sent, with three other Brothers, to open the school of Our Lady of the Gulf at Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. Brother Baldrede was the first to die of yellow fever in 1853 at age twenty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only two years.
