Michael Schneider was born in 1819 in Niederziessen, Prussia. He and his family emigrated to the United States and settled in Detroit, Michigan, about 1851. Four Schneider boys entered the Novitiate of Montreal in 1851: Michael, age thirty-three; John, age thirty-two; Peter, age twenty-two; and Joseph, age nineteen. Michael was to become Brother Ammian and was to teach at St. Vincent's School in St. Louis, Missouri. He was then assigned to Calvert Hall in Baltimore, Maryland, to recover from illness. He returned to the midwest to teach at Detroit and again in St. Louis, where he served as Sub-Director. At age fifty-four he was assigned to the New York Protectory, where for the next twenty years, he managed the dining rooms. He died there at age seventy-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for forty-one years.
