Br. Ambrose Odorick
James Troy was born the son of Michael and Mary Ann Burke Troy on October 15, 1845, in Dublin, Ireland. His family emigrated to the United States and at age twenty-eight he entered the Novitiate at Carondelet, Missouri, on October 18, 1873. In November he received the habit and religious name of Brother Ambrose Odorick. His first teaching assignment took him to St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans in 1874 and to Mobile in July of 1875. His next assignment took him to Memphis where he eventually spent a total of eleven years, 1876-1877, 1880-1885, 1888-1891, 1901-1902, and 1909-1910. Brother Ambrose spent five years in St. Louis, 1877-1878, 1879-1880, 1886-1887, 1888-1889, and 1893-1894 at Carondelet, St. Patrick's, St. Lawrence School, St. Malachy, St. Bridget's and Christian Brothers College. He spent a total of six years in Chicago, 1885-1886, 1891-1893, and 1910-1913, at St. Patrick's High School, and at De La Salle High School. Santa Fe had his teaching services in 1897-1899 and 1902-1909 and six years in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1878-1879, 1888-1889 and 1894-1897. He died at De La Salle in Chicago at the age of sixty-eight, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for forty years.
