Camille Mercier was born on September 18, 1885, at St. Jean, Villeford, France, and made his Novitiate in 1902 in Paris. There he received the religious name of Brother Amarin. He taught in various schools in France until 1910 when he was sent to Mexico. There he taught at Torreon and Zacatecas, until he went to New Mexico and taught at Santa Fe, Bernalillio, and at Sacred Heart in Las Vegas. In 1939, Brother "Pepieto", as he was called, suffered health problems and retired to Lafayette, Louisiana. He suffered a heart attack in 1949 and died at age sixty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for forty-seven years.
