Born on April 5, 1848, Joseph Morton was the son of William and Bridget (Doyle) Morton. Joseph was born in Coolalugg, Ireland, and accepted the invitation, at age 15, by Brother Edward John, to volunteer as missionaries to the United States. Joseph accepted and entered the Novitiate at Carondelet, Missouri, in 1873 where he received the habit and religious name of Brother Aggeus of Jesus. In September of 1874, he was assigned to Christian Brothers College Community to teach at St. Vincent's elementary school. He was the second Brother to contract small pox that year and died at the infirmary of the Carondelet novitiate. He was sixteen years old and had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for only one year.
