Brother Agbert
Jean Pierre Rettel was born in Luxembourg on February 14, 1883. At age 16, in 1899, he sought permission to enter the Brothers' Novitiate at Bettange, France. There he received the habit of Brother and the religious name of Brother Agbert. His teaching career began in his native country and then extended to assignments in Mexico. He came to the United States and was noted for his ability to teach young Brothers to be good teachers. He was assigned as Director of St. Peter's School in New Iberia, Louisiana, from 1931 to 1937. He served at Bernalillo from 1937 to 1943. He was then assigned to Santa Fe where he died suddenly and unexpectedly, at age sixty, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for forty-four years.
