Charles Mathieu was born on March 20, 1839, at St. Claire, Canada, the son of Marcel and Therese Latourneau Mathieu. He was admitted to the Novitiate at Montreal on July 31, 1857, at age eighteen. There he received the habit of the Brother and the religious name of Brother Adalard. He was assigned to teach in New York, at the Bridgeport Orphanage in Chicago, at Cathedral and Annunciation Schools in St. Louis and in 1872 at Christian Brothers College in St. Louis. In 1873 he was named Sub-Director of St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans. There he helped others to health during the yellow fever epidemic until he himself became a victim and died at age thirty-four, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixteen years.
