George Sheel was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on April 20, 1842. He entered religious life through the Novitiate at Montreal, Canada, on March 7, 1855, where he received the robe and the religious name of Brother Maurelian on July 2, 1855. His first teaching assignment was to St. Peter's School in Philadelphia in 1856. He was sent to St. Mary's School in New Orleans in 1860 and was appointed Vice President of Christian Brothers College in Pass Christian, Mississippi, in 1867. That college closed in 1871 and Brother Maurelian was assigned as President of the new Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee, which he opened on November 20, 1871. He survived two yellow fever epidemics in 1873 and 1878. In 1894 he was named Auxiliary Visitor of the St. Louis District and later was chosen as chairman three times for national educational exhibitions but was exiled to France during the Latin Question controversy. He returned to the United States in 1901 to Manhattan College and then to Memphis again in 1902 where he died in 1920 at age seventy-eight, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty-five years.
