Br. Jude Aloysius
James and Kathryn O'Brien Cantwell gave birth to their son James Joseph Cantwell, Jr., on August 7, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, but his mother died shortly after his birth. James was enrolled in St. Mel's Grade School and graduated to St. Mel's High School when in January of 1933 he entered the Juniorate at La Salle Institute in Glencoe. Three years later he progressed to the Novitiate where he received the robe and the religious name of Brother Jude Aloysius on June 15, 1936. He spent one year of his Scholasticate in Glencoe and the remainder at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, where he received his B.S. degree in Social Science in June of 1940. His first teaching assignment was to St. Patrick's High School in Chicago, where, while he taught, he also attended graduate school at Loyola University. His tour of duty took him to teaching positions at Boys Town, Nebraska, 1942-44; Cotter High School, Winona, 1943-44 and 1948-52, serving as Principal from 1950 to 1952; St. Mel's High School in Chicago, 1947-48; St. George High School in Evanston, Illinois, as Director and Principal, 1953-58; De La Salle High School, Chicago, 1958-62, during which time he began preparing for his oral exams for his doctorate; Lewis College, Lockport, Illinois, 1962-75 and 1978-82. Rikkyo University, Tokyo, Japan, 1976-78 and 1983-1985. He returned home for treatment of anemia and eventually for cancer that took his life at age sixty-eight, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-three years.
