Joseph  Cummins was born in New Ross, Ireland, on June 17, 1830, and emigrated to the  United States where, at age thirty-seven, sought admission to the Institute  at our Novitiate at Pass Christian, Mississippi, on May 1, 1867.  In July he received the habit and religious  name of John of Sebaste.  He spent his  religious life in charge of temporal matters in each community he served: St.  Mary's School in New Orleans in 1869; Christian Brothers College in Pass  Christian, 1869-1875, Carondolet Novitiate in St. Louis, Missouri, 1875-1876  and 1882-1883; St Patrick's School in St. Louis, 1876; St. Bridget's in  Chicago, Illinois, 1878; St. Bridget's and St. Vincent's in Chicago,  1878-1882; St. John's in St. Louis, 1883-1886 and La Salle Institute in  Glencoe, Missouri, 1886-1888.  At Pass  Christian he survived while an epidemic of yellow fever ravaged his  community, and he alone was left standing while the epidemic claimed most of  his Brothers.  After suffering from  asthma for many years, Brother John of Sebaste died at age seventy-four,  having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for thirty-six years.
