Br. Hugh Nicholas
James Michael Schumer attended St. George High School in Chicago before the entered the Novitiate in 1951 at Glencoe, Missouri. He completed his undergraduate studies at St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota. His first assignment returned him to Glencoe, Missouri where he taught at La Salle Institute from 1955 to 1960. He was assigned to St. Joseph High School in Westchester, Illinois in 1960 and taught there until 1965 when he was transferred to St. Patrick High School in Chicago where he was to spend the next twenty-six years. He took a sabbatical in 1991 and afterward began working for the Christian Brothers Conference in both Illinois and Landover, Maryland. In 1993 he was assigned to Christian Brothers Center in Romeoville and remained there until 2001 when he retired to the Westmont Community in Westmont, Illinois. Brother Nicholas moved to Resurrection Life Center in Chicago, Illinois in 2013 and died there on December 27, 2015, at age eighty-two. At the time of his death, he had been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty-four years.
