Br. Carthage Leo
Martin John O'Neill was born on March 2, 1896, in Tullig, County Kerry, Ireland. He entered the novitiate on June 22, 1912, in Castletown, Ireland, and there on August 27, 1912, he received the habit of the Brothers and the religious name of Brother Carthage Leo. He completed his Scholasticate training a year later in 1913 and began teaching. Leo came to the United States in the early 1920s and began teaching at St. Patrick High School in Chicago. In 1923 he was assigned to Christian Brothers High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. A year later he was assigned to De La Salle Institute in Chicago and in 1925 he was assigned to Christian Brothers High School in Memphis. In 1926 he returned to Illinois and the Brothers' school in Joliet. In 1927 Brother Carthage Leo returned to the District of Ireland. He died in London, England, in 1972 at the age of seventy-six, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for sixty years.
