Br. Brithweld
Matthias Frisch was born in 1822 in Germany and emigrated to the east coast of the United States. He sought admission to the Institute in New York and was sent to the Novitiate in Montreal in 1852. There he received the habit and religious name of Brother Brithweld. His first assignment took him to St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri, where he taught German. Brother Brithweld was stricken with a rheumatic illness and returned to New York and retired to the community at Brooklyn. There he died a difficult death at age forty-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for twelve years.
