Br. Athanasius of Sebaste
Richard Carroll was born in Ballygurteen, Kilkenny, Ireland, on December 15, 1850. He emigrated to the United States and at age twenty-three entered the Novitiate at Carondelet, Missouri, on September 5, 1873, and received the habit and religious name of Brother Athanasius of Sebaste on November 1, 1873. His first teaching assignment took him in 1874 to St. Patrick's School in St. Louis, Missouri, until he was assigned to St. John's at Prairie du Chien in 1876. His tour of duty continued at St. John's in Chicago 1878-78; Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri, 1878-79; Christian Brothers College in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1880-81, and again 1888-89; Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, 1881-85; Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee, 1885-88, 1892-95, 1902-04, 1904-1911 and 1917-1920; St. Mary's in New Orleans, Louisiana, 1989-91 and as Director 1895-1900; St. Bridget's in St. Louis, Missouri; 1891-92; as Director at De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota 1900-02; St. Alphonsus Rock Church, St. Louis, 1904; De La Salle High School in Chicago, Illinois; 1911-1913 and 1916-17; Sub-Director at St. Michael's in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1913-16; St. Mel's High School in Chicago, 1920 to 1923 where he died at age seventy-three, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty years.
