Br. Arnold of Jesus
William Freuin was born in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland, on December 15, 1832. He was six years old when his family emigrated to New York City. A younger brother, Michael, became Brother Volusian in 1853 at the Montreal Novitiate but after teaching for two years he died of pneumonia. William entered the Novitiate at Montreal on May 5, 1854, at age twenty-two. In June he received the habit and religious name of Arnold of Jesus. After teaching at St. Patrick's (1854-1856) and St. Bridget's Schools (1856-1863) in Montreal, he was appointed to St. Joseph's School as Director in Kingston, Ontario, (1863-1867). He was honored there as the "person who did the most to establish peace between Orangemen and Catholics in the area." Brother Arnold was appointed Director at De La Salle Institute in Toronto where he enlarged the school. He remained there for eleven years before being appointed Director of St. Anne's School in Toronto where he began special vocational classes and a night school for young workers. In 1895 he was appointed to Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri, as Inspector of Classes. He spent 1902-04 in retirement at CBC in St. Joseph, Missouri and in 1904 moved to Glencoe, Missouri, where he died at age seventy-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty years
