Greetings from the Provincial
Brother Larry Schatz, FSC
Dear Friends,
“Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices…”
I remember singing this a lot when I was in grade school. It’s actually a pretty profound opening line when you think about it. First of all, it’s communal: thank WE all our God.
Our Ministries Celebrate Milestone Anniversaries
The Midwest District
Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, Tennessee, is celebrating the 140th anniversary of its founding – November 1871. A 140th Anniversary Alumni Reunion Weekend was held October 14-15 on the CBHS campus. Brothers’ Boys from nine (9) graduating classes came together (Classes of 1951, 1956, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1996, and 2001) during the same weekend to celebrate their reunions.
Change in LTIP Assures Graduation in Four Years
Brother Patrick Conway, LTIP Director
In order to better accommodate the students pursuing a teaching degree and assist in graduating them in a more timely fashion, the Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program (LTIP) was reconfigured this past year and shifted from a semester to a summer experience. Over the past four years, several young men have found themselves unable to finish their degree in four years. It should be noted that across the United States a growing number of students choosing a career in education are finding themselves in this position.
What prevents a student from graduating in four year?
Introducing Cohort 5
Matthew Kotek, LTIP, Reflects on LTIP Experience
During the summer of 2011, I participated in the Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program sponsored in part by Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. One key experience of this summer was a week-long immersion into life at a a Catholic Worker house located in Kansas City, Missouri. Over the week, my classmates, professor, and I became fully immersed into the culture of inner-city living which was a sharp contrast to the lives that we had all been previously living.
Summer Marked by Retreat, Transition and Celebration
Brother Joseph Martin, Director of Senior Brothers
On July 20th about 140 Brothers from the Midwest District gathered at the conference center at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois, for the “Called to be Brothers” retreat. The program occurred in the middle of a two year reflection process by all the Brothers in the U.S. Region. They have read about, reflected on, and discussed their lives as men religious since they were “called to be Brothers.”
World Youth Day 2011 Madrid Spain
Brother Stephen Markham, Director of Vocation Ministry
Hundreds of youth and young at heart gathered in Madrid, Spain to celebrate World Youth Days this summer. A group of fifteen De La Salle Brothers, Postulants and Contacts from our US/ Toronto Region, including our own Contacts, Tom Iven and Marc Vega, along with Brother Stephen Markham were among them.
Five Brothers, three postulants and seven Contacts arrived in Madrid, Tuesday, August 16. The Brothers at Sacred Heart School in Madrid hosted ours and several other Lasallian groups from around the world. Br. Peter Killeen, leader of the group, and the postulants and contacts each had a space on the gym floor. The older Brothers had private rooms in the Brothers’ house.
Help Along the Way… Trash or Treasure?
Brother Thomas Hetland, Director of Development
As the saying goes, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” On a shelf in my office are two items that indeed look like they belong in the trash, but for me they are a treasure, invoking a meaningful memory. That’s a lot to ask of an emptypotatochippackandaplasticwaterbottle. Buttometheyare reminders of some help I got along the way, reminders of the concern of strangers.
