View the 4 page brochure about the Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program titled "Preparing Young Men to Become Teachers."
Our
Lasallian schools are looking for
young men to continue the tradition
of teaching the minds and touching
the hearts of young people as either
a layman or a Christian Brother.
Are
you a person who: enjoys a sense of adventure,
is willing to take a risk, and would
like to make a difference in the lives
of others?
If you are, keep reading!
The Lasallian Teacher
Immersion Program (LTIP)
is a collaborative effort involving;
Christian
Brothers University,
Memphis, TN; Lewis
University, Romeoville,
IL and Saint
Mary's University,
Winona, MN
If a young man who is interested
in a career as a teacher enrolls as
an education major at any one of the
three universities listed above, he
can participate in a program unlike
any other teacher preparation program
in the country!

Once enrolled at one of the three
Lasallian universities, LTIP students
will be encouraged to embrace all
college life has to offer, including
co-curriculars, athletics, dating,
work study, etc.
However, LTIP students
will participate in two for-credit
immersion programs while in college
that will literally change their perspective
on life. During the second semester
of their first year, students will
live and study with other young men
who also are interested in becoming
teachers, but they will do so in an
environment very different from the
typical university setting. Outside
of the two immersion programs, LTIP
students will be invited to participate
in additional Lasallian formation
programs that will enhance their educational
experience and prepare them for the
classroom.

Young
men who choose to enter the LTIP
will enroll at Christian Brothers
University (CBU), Lewis University
(LU), or Saint Mary’s University
(SMU), where they will participate
in a second semester, for-credit
educational immersion program.
Holy Family Catholic Worker
Kansas City, Missouri
Beginning the second semester of
freshman year, LTIP students will
live, study, and work in a Catholic
Worker shelter for four weeks. Each
day will begin with a class in which
they learn about the plight of the
poor and the gospel response. Then
students will prepare food and serve
up to 200 homeless “guests” each
evening. In addition, students will
alternate their morning schedule
with an inner-city day-care center
and a medical clinic.
After completing four weeks at Holy
Family Catholic Worker, students will
spend one week processing the experience
of living among and serving the poor
as well as completing the required
academic work for their respective
universities. Then they will move
on to the the next site, the inner-city
of Chicago.
San Miguel School
Chicago, Illinois
In 1995, the Christian Brothers
of the Midwest District opened their
first inner-city middle school for
at-risk students. At this particular
site, the crime rate is particularly
high. For the next four weeks, LTIP
students will live in a co-ed community
with teachers, volunteers, and Brothers
in what used to be a convent, located
across the street from the school.
A typical week- day will include
a university class in education,
observation, tutoring, and assisting
the faculty and staff in the classroom
and with extracurricular activities.
After a week of “spring break,” LTIP
students will resume their immersion
experience at a secondary high school.
Christian Brothers College High School
St. Louis, Missouri
Christian Brothers College (CBC)
High School is the oldest Catholic
high school sponsored by the Christian
Brothers of the Midwest District.
However, in 2003 the school moved
to a new site, and is now considered
one of the finest schools in the
Midwest. LTIP students will live
off-site (about 30 minutes from
the school). Each day will begin
with a formal class in education
followed by a drive to the school.
Once at the school, LTIP students
will have apprenticelike activities
with students, faculty, and staff
both in and out of the classroom.
The semester immersion experience
will conclude with a one-week
experience in which LTIP students
will process their time together
in the context of a retreat. Time
will also be provided for completing
academic requirements. At semester's
end, LTIP students will receive
16 credits from their respective
universities.
The program will
include the following:
Week
1: Orientation on community
living and second semester coursework.
Lasallian prayer, liturgy and faith-sharing will be an integral part of daily
life throughout the second semester immersion program.
Weeks 2 - 5: Living
and working at Holy Family Catholic
Worker in Kansas City. The goal is
to experience poverty first-hand and
grow in understanding the systems
that perpetuate poverty and how to
break the cycle through education.
A two-hour class in theology will
take place each the morning. At semester’s
end the student will have earned 6
credits in theology/religion.
Week 6: Process
Holy Family Community experience and
complete theology requirements. Prepare
for 2nd 4-week block at San Miguel
Week 7-10: During
this four week block students will
live in community, observe and tutor
at San Miguel (Back of the Yards),
Chicago. The goal is to have a first-hand
experience in one of our middle schools
and grow in their understanding of
educating at-risk youth. Two university
classes will take place during the
course of the day: a 90-minute class
in the morning and a 75-minute class
in the afternoon.
Week 11: Break
Weeks 12-15: During
this four-week block students will
live at La Salle Institute in Wildwood,
MO. The school day, however, will
be spent observing and possibly tutoring
at Christian Brothers College High
School (CBC) in St. Louis, MO. CBC
is one of the “anchor” schools
with a 150 + year tradition in the
Midwest District. The goal is to further
acclimate young men to education in
our culture with an emphasis on the
secondary level. Again, two university
classes will take place during the
course of the day: a 90-minute class
in the morning and a 75-minute class
in the afternoon. Education classes
will begin during the second 4-week
block at San Miguel and continue into
the final 4-week block at CBC. At
semester’s end the student will
have earned 9 credits in education.
Week 16: The
final week of the semester’s
Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program
will consist of making a one-week
retreat at La Salle Institute. The
goal is to process the previous 15
weeks through discussion and prayer;
however, time will be set aside to
complete course assignments and final
exams.

Antigua, Guatemala, Central America
Between the sophomore and junior year
of college, LTIP students will spend
five weeks in Guatemala. The first
three weeks will be spent studying
Spanish one-on-one and living with
a Guatemalan family in Antigua. The
remainder of the time will be spent
on a guided educational tour by Christian
Brothers (from the United States)
who have lived and worked in Guatemala
for a combined 70 years. The purpose
of this immersion experience is threefold:
1) to familiarize LTIP students with
our global Lasallian network; 2) to
develop an appreciation for the people
and culture of a developing country;
and 3) to meet the needs of Spanish-speaking
students and families in the United
States. LTIP students will receive
6 to 9 credits upon completion of
the summer immersion experience.
