March for Life 2013

I have gone on the March for Life a number of years now (I think this was my seventh march, if memory serves), going back through high school, college, and now as a teacher at CBC.

On my first march, as a freshman in high school, I was blown away by the sheer number of people who marched.  I saw Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, and even atheists rallying together for a common cause (perhaps one of the few causes on which all of us would agree), and I was extremely moved by such a show of solidarity.  I am still moved after all these years, although something else has struck me these past few years.  As I reflect on the March for Life in light of our Lasallian charism it strikes me how essential to our mission as Lasallians the sanctity of all human life truly is.  After all, what moved our Founder and his Brothers to action if not the recognition that each and every human life is sacred and worthwhile?

De La Salle showed us that everything we do in his name (i.e., as Lasallians) is and must be animated by the firm belief that all people, especially children who are unloved and unwanted by many, deserve a chance at life, both here in this world and at eternal life in the next.  De La Salle shows us what it is to be truly and radically pro-life, not just in name, but in action as well.

March for Life, January 25

DeLaSalle&BabySmall

Greetings From the Nation’s Capital
Please know that your school’s pro-life delegation is invited to join with other delegations from Lasallian schools at the March for Life on Friday, January 25. We will assemble at the Navy Memorial (8th St. and D St.) in downtown Washington, beginning at 12 noon and then departing at 12:30pm for the rally on the National Mall. These links will take you to street maps of Washington that should prove very helpful:

Our Plan
12noon
Meet and socialize at the Navy Memorial (circular plaza close to the intersection of 8th St. and D St.). In case the Navy Memorial is off limits, plan B is to meet at corner of National Archives (Pennsylvania Ave. and 9th St.)

12:30pm
Walk to the National Mall (the area between 7th and 9th Streets) to listen to rally speeches

1:20pm
Congregate at the “modern red sculpture” in front of the Hirschorn Museum (7th and Jefferson); group picture

1:30pm
Approximate start time of the march itself

2:30pm
Approximate end of march. Some Lasallian delegations will turn left from Constitution Ave. onto Second St. and rest at St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill (313 Second St. http://www.st-josephs.org/)

Possibly Helpful Hints
The closest metro stop to the Navy Memorial is Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter.
For those of you attending the Youth Rally and Mass in the Verizon Center, it is approximately a ten minute walk to the Navy Memorial.
If you would like to speak with me (Bro. Peter) on the phone, my cell phone number is 508-847-4132.
In case you are having trouble reaching me by cell phone on the day of the march itself, you may also try Bro. Richard Galvin at 347-635-9596.
We have a large banner that reads “Lasallians for Life” and “Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!”.
The website for the Youth Rally and Mass (Verizon Center and Comcast Center) is http://youthrallyandmassforlife.org.
The website for the March for Life is www.marchforlife.org.
For those who are new to the march…at the end you may want to visit Union Station, which has a metro stop and a plethora of eating establishments.
Pray for good weather! If we have inclement weather, it is unlikely that we will stay at the Navy Memorial from noon-12:30!
If you’d like to see the place where we’ll congregate at 1:20pm, type modern red sculpture hirschorn into google images.

This is the first year that we have invited Lasallian schools to march together. I hope your group will join us! Please say a prayer that this plan works smoothly. Certainly we will be able to improve upon it for the March of 2014. Thank you for helping instill in your students an appreciation for the inestimable dignity of human life.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

Sincerely,
