The Adventure

Today was by far our most adventurous day! I don’t know if any of you know, but there was a huge tropical storm that hit Guatemala over the past couple days. Because of this nonstop treacherous rainfall there have been numerous mudslides all around the country. Today we were planning on traveling from Huehuetenango to San Lucas, which is located on Lake Atitlan. Partway through our trip we were told there was no way that we would be able to take our van the whole way to San Lucas. So we left our van, jumped on a boat, and made our way to San Lucas. This was much more of an adventure than these words on the computer screens make it seem like. The damage was terrible, literally wiping out homes of people, killing some, and injuring others. It was hard to look at as we drove through the country. Once we were on the boat we were able to see the landslides from far away. It was quite a sad scene. Luckily we arrived safely to San Lucas, and we are excited to get to work. After talking to other volunteers and missionaries here, we realize that they haven’t had a storm here like this since 2005.

We are all excited to partake in this unexpected adventure. We promise to be safe! But after a volcano erupting and a legendary tropical storm stranding many people, who knows what will happen next! Hope everything is going well back home!

Thanks, Bill. Actually, we had no idea how serious the storm was until we saw the roads and heard the news. It’s the rainy season, so we thought it was just a heavier rain than usual.
Thanks for the prayers—we all know they are making a difference!

OK, just in case you were getting worried that the interest in your daily adventures was going to taper off as you near the end of your stay – stop worrying! You have everyone’s attention! Wow when I heard the word Guatemala on the evening news I was glued to the tv and opened the website with concern. However, your smiling faces and Jon’s great description of the previous day was most appreciated. Since I don’t believe in coincidences I am sure that you are right where you are supposed to be and I am sure that all your help is most appreciated. However, we do not want to see you on the news … stay safe and may God keep each of you in the palm of his hand. Cheryl

    Cheryl—
Thanks so much. We are truly amazed and thankful at how we have sort of come though virtually unscathed by all the stuff going on. I’m convinced everyone’s prayers are carrying us through. Vaya con Dios.

    Hello everybody,
I’m really glad to hear that everybody is doing fine. Yes, I was watching last night the news about Guatemala and things look pretty bad. Espero que esta experiencia lejos de desanimarles les haya infundado nuevo espiritu. Por supuesto que me imagino que la aventura fue mucho mayor que lo que las palabras pueden expresar! That’s good :-)
Cuidense mucho, you are all in my prayers.

    Dearest LTIPers,
We were amazed to read about your great adventure en route to San Lucas Toliman! We’re certain that the spirit and energy that your group is giving and receiving on this trip is also part of the “ruah” (is that the right word – hebrew for divine wind?! now translate to spanish!) in the tropical storm and volcano eruption! Thank you for the postings – it is wonderful to read about your experiences and all that you are learning. You are inspiring our faith!
    Peace,
    Russ and Mary
