Brother Larry Schatz, Provincial and Visitor of the Christian Brothers of the Midwest, today announced a $1 million gift from business leader and philanthropist Betty Kabara of Galena, Illinois and Goodyear, Arizona.

The majority of the gift, the largest ever by a living individual to the Midwest District, will endow her gift to the Kabara Challenge, an annual matching gift challenge to support care of Senior Brothers.

In making the gift, Ms. Kabara remarked, “This gift is to honor the Brothers who do so much for so many.  My late husband, Dr. Jon Kabara, attended both high school and college sponsored by the Brothers and held them in the highest regard.  I hope everyone will continue to support the Challenge each year, and the Senior Brothers.”

In recognition of the gift the Provincial headquarters building in Burr Ridge, Illinois will be permanently renamed the Dr. Jon and Betty Kabara Center.

Brother Larry Schatz commented, “I speak for all the De La Salle Christian Brothers in the Midwest District when I say how grateful we are to our dear friend Betty Kabara for this gift. Her generosity and her leadership will live on in this way forever.”
